Mark Ridyard's journey from actor and small business owner to beloved children's book author is a testament to the power of storytelling and the enduring magic of books. Born with an insatiable appetite for tales, Mark had his nose buried in books from the tender age of three, a passion that would shape his entire life.
He was born in his parent`s house in1964 (never being one to let the grass grow under his feet, he couldn`t wait to get to the hospital and decided to make an early entrance into the world). After his parent’s relationship broke down when he was 7 yrs old, Mark lived with his mum and two brothers and Grew up on a council estate in Breightmet in the town of Bolton in England. (No-one apart from the people who live there seem to be able to pronounce that. Br 8 met).
Growing up in a tough environment in the 1970`s without a father was challenging and difficult at times and Mark got into many scrapes as a boy and young man and learned how to survive very early on. After countless incidents of being bullied at school in the early years He became proficient in various styles of martial arts and always found peace and escape when he buried his head in books.
Mark's early years were filled with the adventures found within the pages of classic children's literature and adventure fantasy books. His mother nurtured his love for reading, often finding young Mark awake well past his bedtime, flashlight in hand, devouring yet another chapter. At 3 years old, Mark could often be found 'reading' to his stuffed animals, making up stories from picture books and doing different voices as the characters.
This early fascination with stories naturally led Mark to the world of acting. For over two decades, he graced stages all over the Northwest of England, bringing characters to life and captivating audiences with his performances and worked amongst some famous well known actors in film and television in various roles.
His Acting went hand in hand with his singing career which Mark loved and went on to sing in many venues across Blackpool & Manchester under his stage name of Christian Storm, and even had a record release after his appearance on take me out. (when asked about his stage name, Mark says it sounds much better when you get the intro “Ladies & Gentlemen Mr Christian Storm” rather than “Ladies & Gentlemen Mr Mark Ridyard”, it just doesn`t have the same ring to it and Christian got into situations that Mark would never do, like the time he was dressed as a bunch of grapes chasing a banana from the top of the O2 arena in London to end up at the bottom on stage with Paddy Mcguinness).
His Father was a professional comedian and often brought Mark on stage as a young boy to give the audience a song (Mark would say his dad probably did this to fill a slot and win the sympathy vote from the audience, which pretty much always worked).
Mark loved playing different characters and took so much fun in getting paid to play around and pretend, a trait which stayed with him all his life. However, the call of creating his own stories never faded, and in 2024, Mark made the bold decision to transition from singing and acting (as well as a few other jobs in between which he winged and played his way through) to writing. His small courier business at TTMF keeps him in food and a roof over his head until such time that his books hopefully sell many of and he can realise his dream and retire to the country as a full time writer. (preferably with a log cabin in a beautiful location with a lake, or a villa somewhere warm. All donations of the said cabin in a beautiful location gladly accepted if you have one spare.)
Drawing from his rich experiences in theatre, television and life lessons along with his lifelong love of children's literature, Mark crafts tales that blend whimsy, adventure, and valuable life lessons. His books show vibrant characters, imaginative plots, and the subtle way they encourage young readers to explore their emotions and the world around them while improving their reading pleasure and skills.
His books often feature themes of self-discovery, the power of imagination, and the importance of empathy. Critics have praised his work for its ability to captivate both children and adults.
Mark is currently working on his first novel which is set in a fantasy world and involves a nice but chaotic young man who seems to get through life on pure chance, luck and a good sense of humour (we cannot imagine where he got the idea for that character from) which also includes a few hapless assassins who for some reason or another seem to keep wanting to kill him.
